Lock Jammed and Won't Turn? Causes and Fixes

By West Bay Locksmith ServicesLicense #LCO8530

You slide your key into the lock, and it just will not turn. Or maybe it turns halfway and then stops dead. A jammed lock is one of the most common problems homeowners face across Sonoma County, from older homes in Healdsburg to newer construction in Windsor. Before you panic or start forcing the key, let us walk through the most likely causes and what you can do about them.

Could Dirt and Debris Be Jamming Your Lock?

A homeowner near Luther Burbank Gardens in Santa Rosa had a jammed Kwikset deadbolt. Turned out the door frame swelled from winter rain. We realigned the strike plate, 15 minutes. But that is not the only cause. Over time, dirt, dust, and tiny particles accumulate inside the lock cylinder. This is especially common in Sonoma County where seasonal wind and dust from nearby vineyards and rural roads can work their way into exterior locks. The fix is often simple: spray a small amount of graphite-based dry lubricant directly into the keyhole. Do not use WD-40 or oil-based lubricants. They attract more dust and will make the problem worse over time. Insert your key and work it gently back and forth to distribute the lubricant through the pins. In many cases, this solves the problem immediately.

Is a Worn or Bent Key the Problem?

If your key is old, bent, or has worn-down teeth, it may no longer align properly with the lock pins. Compare your key to a spare. If the teeth look flattened or the blade is visibly bent, that is your problem. Get a new copy made from your spare, not from the worn key. Key cutting costs just $5 to $15 for standard house keys at most hardware stores or from a mobile locksmith. If you do not have a spare, a locksmith in Sonoma County can cut a new key from the lock code or by impressioning the lock, typically $25 to $50.

Cause 3: Misaligned Door or Strike Plate

Sometimes the lock itself is fine. The door has shifted. Wood doors in Petaluma and Sebastopol homes expand and contract with temperature and humidity changes throughout the year. When a door swells or sags, the bolt no longer lines up with the strike plate on the frame, making the lock extremely hard to turn. Try lifting or pushing the door firmly into the frame while turning the key. If that works, the fix is to realign the strike plate or shave down the door edge. A locksmith or handyman can handle this for around $75 to $125.

When to Replace the Lock Entirely

If lubrication, a new key, and door alignment do not fix the jam, the lock cylinder itself may be worn out or damaged internally. Locks in Sonoma County homes that are 15 to 20 years old often reach this point. A broken spring, worn pin tumbler, or corroded internal components can make a lock unreliable. At that point, replacement is the smartest move. A new Grade 2 residential deadbolt installed by West Bay Locksmith Services typically costs $150 to $250 including hardware. Rekeying the new lock to match your other doors adds just $25 per additional cylinder. Call us at (707) 775-7069 for a free phone estimate.
