5 Signs It Is Time to Replace Your Door Locks

By West Bay Locksmith ServicesLicense #LCO8530

Your door locks are the first line of defense for your home. But like any mechanical device, they wear out over time. Whether you live in a Victorian in downtown Santa Rosa or a ranch house in Sebastopol, knowing when to replace your locks can prevent a break-in before it happens. Here are five signs it is time to call a locksmith.

1. Does Your Key Stick or Feel Hard to Turn?

A homeowner on Mendocino Avenue brought us a deadbolt so worn the key barely turned. The pins were ground flat after 20 years. If you have to jiggle, wiggle, or force your key to get the lock to turn, the internal pins or cylinder are wearing out. This is especially common in older homes across Petaluma and Healdsburg where locks may be decades old. A sticking lock is not just annoying. It means the mechanism is failing and could leave you locked out at the worst time. A locksmith can inspect the lock and recommend a repair or replacement depending on the condition. In most cases, a new deadbolt runs $85 including professional installation.

2. You Moved Into a New Home

When you buy or rent a new home in Sonoma County, you have no idea how many copies of the existing keys are floating around. The previous owner, their family, their dog walker, their house cleaner, anyone could still have a working key. The safest move is to rekey or replace every exterior lock on move-in day. Rekeying costs just $25 per lock and takes about 15 minutes. It is one of the most affordable security upgrades you can make, and we do it same-day across all 19 cities we serve.

3. Is Your Lock Showing Visible Damage or Rust?

Rust, corrosion, loose screws, or a wobbling deadbolt are all signs that a lock has reached the end of its useful life. Coastal homes near Bodega Bay and properties in fog-heavy areas like Occidental and Forestville are especially prone to lock corrosion from moisture. A rusted lock is not just ugly. The internal springs and pins corrode too, weakening the entire mechanism. If you can see damage on the outside, the inside is almost certainly worse. Replace it before it fails completely. We see this regularly on older homes near Fourth Street in Santa Rosa where the morning fog sits heaviest.

4. You Still Have a Basic Doorknob Lock With No Deadbolt

A standard doorknob lock can be defeated in seconds with a credit card or a simple shimming tool. If your exterior doors do not have a deadbolt, your home is significantly more vulnerable. This is surprisingly common in older homes in Rohnert Park, Cotati, and Windsor that were built before modern security standards. Adding a Grade 2 or Grade 1 deadbolt to every exterior door is one of the most effective security upgrades available. We install Schlage, Kwikset, Yale, and Medeco deadbolts starting at $85 per door.

5. You Want Smart Home Integration

If you are building a smart home setup with Alexa, Google Home, or Apple HomeKit, your old mechanical locks are holding you back. Modern smart locks from August, Yale, Schlage Encode, and Kwikset Halo let you lock and unlock your door from your phone, set auto-lock schedules, grant temporary access codes to guests, and see a log of who entered and when. We install and configure smart locks starting at $95, including Wi-Fi pairing and app setup. Many homeowners in Santa Rosa and Sonoma are making this upgrade as part of a broader home security refresh.
